The main functions of oil casing:
Drilling involves passing through various unstable rock formations, such as unconsolidated sandstone and shale. Casing supports the wellbore wall and prevents collapse and blockage.
It isolates oil, gas, and water layers of varying pressure, preventing them from intermixing and potentially causing accidents. This prevents water from entering the producing zone or air from high-pressure zones from influxing into the wellbore.
It works with equipment such as blowout preventers to form a closed system, acting as a critical barrier to control downhole pressure and prevent blowouts.
It provides a pathway for drill pipe, production tubing (tubing), and downhole tools, and serves as the essential path for oil and gas flows to the surface.
It isolates shallow freshwater aquifers, preventing contamination by drilling fluid and formation fluids.
Oil casing is the lifeline of oil well operation.
